She was born by a pretty beautiful woman who on the other side was known to be no-nonsense and also knows how to do her hustles. She gave birth to a child at her parent's house and knowing they could not all feed from the parents, she had to look for work and where she landed on was a DM job which she did with all her heart to raise this little one she has left with her elderly parents. Anyway, it's not about my momma today but meeee...
So growing up in Kangaita village and this little one grows to be a big girl through her lower and upper primary school with all the challenges but somehow she hacked. Just like any other class 8 candidate would be, this girl was very excited to finally finish her primary education not knowing what was awaiting her. We took photos as usual to celebrate the last day of exams.
After exams, stayed home with her granny for the rest of the time until the results were out. But guess what, she couldn't go for her results. Why? Because she had a school balance of roughly 850 kshs which she could not afford nor her guardian. So while the rest of her former classmates were all happy and jumpy heading to pick their results, all the girl would do is stand by the road side and watch them discuss the secondary and high schools they were to join. Poor girl had no life. She felt so hopeless and demotivated and saw like that is all she was born to be.
Since no one could afford to take her to high school, few weeks passed and the girl's uncle informed her that a friend of his who lived in Kayole, Nairobi needed a house girl. Phewks! She was going to visit and live in the city. She never cared but all she wanted was leave home and do something with her life. One challenge though, the government had announced that there was no employment for anyone without an identity card (18 and above). Pulling the two heads together, they decided to apply for an identity card using the primary school leaving certificate. How? They just had the headmaster of the school indicate the birth year they told him on the certificate so that when applying for the ID the officer could clearly see that the girl was of age. Picked all the necessary documents and went to apply for the ID. It was a success and after like a month she got her ID. She was now ready to head to the city for a house girl job. Packed her clothes in a small bag and promised her granny that she would be back with a lot of money.
She headed to the city with her uncle and he handed her over the friend that needed a house girl and left her after a nice talk of having her promise to be a good girl. Very naive and new to the city. She started her life in Kayole as a house girl. Luckily enough, the family she was working for were so good to her and treated her like their own and thus never felt the urge to leave. She would would prepare the small boy for school every morning, come back and do normal house chores as it is for every other DM. She used to earn about 3,000 kshs every month and being the girl she was, she could spend some amount on clothing and save the rest to spoil her granny and fam over Christmas wooih! Even though she felt at home, there was some level of being uncomfortable she would experience. Ever been in the midst of people loaded with money and you were the only broke one? Ever had that feeling? Exactly! That is how she would feel whenever the whole family was around. This went on for a period of a whole good 9 months...yes. Imagine! Yes me! I did house girl work in Kayole for 9 months and proud of it as it's one of my foundations that help me never forget where i have come from. Doing such work to raise money which would never be enough to take me to high school and on the other side my former classmates were already getting done with their first year in high school. Hopeless and disappointed village girl. Always be grateful for your past because in one way or another it molded you for who you are today.
Anyway, so Christmas was here with us and it was time to go home. The girl was happy because now she had a few coins that she could use to buy her granny some shopping. She got home the day before Christmas and she was balling with the few coins...Jesus is Lord.
Shall we continue with the story on Friday? Keep it here for a continuation :-)
